Extended Holiday Break Due to COVID-19

Updated: Nov 20

Dayton Public Schools Families,

Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery County, students in the Dayton Public Schools will have an extended holiday break. Please review the details below.

New Holiday Break The extended break is now Monday, November 23rd - Sunday, January 3rd, 2021.

  • There will be no virtual instruction during this break.

  • Students will return on Monday, January 4th.

  • The district will provide 7 days’ worth of meals to students during the extended break.

  • There will not be athletics during the break.

  • More information on meals will be shared soon.

Returning from Break When students return on Monday, January 4th, 2021, hybrid instruction and virtual learning (for those who request it) will resume. The situation will be re-evaluated closer to the return date, and plans may change depending on the circumstances.

Extending the Year Due to the extended holiday break, the school year will be extended to June 29th for students. The calendar will be adjusted, and February 8th is now a regular school day.

Family and Student Resource Handbook

A resource handbook is available for you to reference throughout the extended break. Inside you will find information about how to keep your student engaged in his or her learning, how to access MindPlay, ALEKS and SuccessMaker and additional educational resources and activities to try at home. Also included are community resources for food assistance, mental health care, COVID-19 information, and more.

These changes allow us to combat the surge in COVID-19 cases in our area and allow students and staff to return in January ready to learn. We will be able to continue our work toward closing the achievement gap, and seniors will have adequate time to finish all requirements needed for graduation due to the extended school year.

We understand that you may still have questions about the details of this plan.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as the district finalizes and implements this change. This decision is being made with the safety of students and staff in mind. Please continue to stay safe and healthy — wash your hands, wear a mask, and please practice social distancing for the benefit of all.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Lolli Superintendent
